What is EMDR?
EMDR uses the brain’s natural ability to heal itself. Its purpose is to improve mental health and reduce emotional distress. EMDR is centred upon “Adaptive Information Processing” (AIP). It can also be used to treat problems including tinnitus, phobias, addiction, and eating disorders.
Unlike some forms of therapy, EMDR isn’t based on talking or medication. Instead, it centres on rapid eye movement (REM). We experience REM during deep sleep, which can help us process our emotional experiences.
EMDR is dependent upon bilateral stimulation. During this process, stimulation is carried out alternately on each side of the patient’s body. Stimulation can come in the form of eye movements, tapping, buzzers, beats and tones.
When someone receives this type of therapy, the treatment is split into stages. Your therapist won’t move on to the next stage until the previous one is completed. One of these stages can be desensitisation. During this stage, a patient can undergo bilateral stimulation whilst they think about a past trauma. The purpose of this is to become desensitised to the memory. An EMDR therapist may also help the patient attach a new, healthier meaning to the negative memory.
More and more people are opting for EMDR therapy in Liverpool when they’re dealing with unpleasant memories from the past. Although EMDR was only used for treating PTSD in the past, it is now a popular treatment for a range of challenges, including problems with self-esteem, OCD, depression, phobias, unstable moods, bereavement, and addiction.

What happens when we experience a traumatic event?
When something stressful happens to us, our minds normally heal naturally so we’re not still troubled by the event in future years. Our minds tend to adjust to the event during REM sleep. If an event is particularly traumatic, it can be much more difficult for our minds to process it.
Present events can reactivate the feelings that we experienced at the time of the event and cause nightmares and flashbacks. These unpleasant memories can have a negative impact on the way that we say ourselves and the world around us.
How Can EMDR Therapy Help With PTSD?
Working with an EMDR therapist can be very efficient when it comes to helping people deal with PTSD. During the sessions, a therapist can recreate the kind of eye movements experienced during REM sleep by moving their finger backwards and forwards within your field of vision.
This type of therapy aims to change your thoughts for the better and make your traumatic memories less intense. Memories that you associate with the event may also be re-processed. If the therapy is successful, you may benefit from changes in your beliefs, reduced stress and a reduction in any physical symptoms that the memory tends to cause.
The movements are used to move the negative memory to the cognitive part of the brain, known as the prefrontal cortex, rather than the emotional part, so it can be stored more naturally.
Many people who have PTSD have benefitted from this therapy thanks to the way that it helps them reprocess their memories. The therapy can make the memory feel less vivid and emotional while helping you replace negative beliefs with positive ones. EMDR may help you see things from a different, more positive perspective and return you to a state of calmness.
How long do EMDR sessions last?
These sessions tend to last around an hour or slightly longer. Many people receive this therapy once or twice a week. The number of sessions you need can depend on factors like the severity of your problem. EMDR therapy is sometimes delivered as part of another kind of therapy.
Here are just some of the benefits of EMDR Therapy
- Reduces the symptoms of PTSD: EMDR is highly effective in treating the symptoms of PTSD, such as flashbacks, emotional distress, anger and anxiety.
- Fast results: many patients experience faster relief from emotional distress than they did with any talk therapies.
- Addresses unprocessed trauma: EMDR helps to process and resolve traumatic memories even if the event happened a long time ago.
- Improves emotional regulation: patients often say that they feel more in control over their emotional reactions, which makes them less prone to anxiety and panic attacks.
- Non-invasive: some therapeutical techniques encourage the patient to give detailed descriptions of their trauma, but this isn’t required by EMDR therapy.
- Reduces psychological distress: a large number of patients say they’ve noticed a decrease in headaches, stomach aches and tension which were caused by stress.
- Builds resilience: As the patient processes their trauma, they build emotional resilience, which helps them cope much better with stressful situations in the future.
EMDR therapy is becoming more popular for a number of reasons, including the way it can relieve PTSD symptoms like severe anxiety, nightmares and flashbacks. It can also help people process recent traumatic events and ones that occurred many years ago. A growing number of people are booking EMDR therapy sessions to overcome or reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression.
This therapy also has a great reputation for boosting confidence and self-esteem. It does this by helping patients to process negative experiences in a positive manner. This therapy may also benefit you if you’re dealing with problems like grief and loss, pain, eating disorders and performance anxiety at work or college.
How does EMDR therapy work?
This therapy works by enabling you to access and reprocess memories of traumatic events. This is achieved by stimulating eye movements. EMDR aims to help you feel like the psychological memory has been “fixed” whilst empowering you to manage the feelings related to it in a more positive manner. Many people prefer to receive the treatment as part of one-on-one therapy. However, some have found group sessions more effective.
Contrary to what some people expect, you won’t be hypnotised during EMDR therapy. You will remain wide awake and fully alert. Processing may continue after your session has come to an end. Your therapist may encourage you to rest after each session and avoid noisy, stressful environments if possible. You may be encouraged to partake in bilateral exercises like jogging between sessions to complement the therapy.
